Jeanette

Jeanette

Jeanette was my weekend buddy!  Her parents went on a trip and asked if she could stay with us.  I was quite excited to have her.  She is such an incredibly sweet girl and so kind to my kids.  We probably bored her to death since we are not a teenage household, but more of a toddler household.

The kids were having a playdate with the Webb’s when she got here, so there were 10 kids here on Friday afternoon.  Did I mention that we were doing tye dye T-shirts with the 10 kids!!!  Then Saturday we ran all around to soccer games, did a little photo shoot, and fit in a quick trip to Maurices (I got that green skirt Kristy).  That night I drug Jeanette with me to a girl’s night out, with a bunch of young moms.  We went to Chili’s and then the movie.

I think when Sunday came around she was ready to go back home to the peace and quiet.  She just has such a sweet disposition, I was really sad to see her leave!

Handkerchief Skirts

I made these when Kristy was still living here, and just have been too busy to post them. They were quick to make (just an afternoon). They were way cheap ($10 for supplies for 4 skirts). They were just fun to do because they were so easy!May 2009 001

I should have gotten a photo of all four of the girls in them. But two is better than none!

The Art Show

The school kids had their art show this week.  It was fun to walk around finding their pieces of art.  I think my younger two kids liked the refreshments a little more than their sisters and brothers’ art!

Then above are the kids teachers.  I know I’ve said it a lot, but my kids LOVE art!  They love being creative.

Shhhh… Don’t Tell

I have been doing a freezer group with five other friends, each from a different Ward. They all happen to be gourmet chefs and make the most amazing dinners. I just am crossing my fingers, and hoping that they won’t kick me out of the group because I AM NOT a gourmet chef. So please do not pass this along to them, I really want to keep getting their meals. Today we exchanged.

I’m grateful that a sweet friend let me do this with her. And love how she set it up! We don’t all do soup one month and then casseroles the next. (My family would be sick of what ever the food was for the month) Instead she set up a rotating schedule, where one does soup, another dessert, chicken dish, beef dish and then casserole. Then we just rotate the next month and so forth.

Freezer Meals

I LOVE having these in my freezer as yummy back up meals for those crazy nights (pretty much EVERY night). I want to save them, yet I can’t wait to eat them!

A Little Tongue

So we have been doing a few make-up soccer games due to the previous weekend blizzards.  The weather has been beautiful and so I was able to shoot some photos.  Tonight I sat down to look at the photos and found a little tongue hanging out in most of my kids photos.  I don’t know if it helps them concentrate or what, but there it is in their pictures.

Here is another one:

Rebecca Soccer 3

SOOO, I’ve learned that I need to take pictures of my kids throwing the ball in like this – and then I don’t get that little tongue hanging out.

Kaylee Soccer

I’ve also learned after reviewing these photos that I sure take better shots of other people’s children than I do my own.  I think I get too into the game and forget to take pictures when my kids have the ball.  At any rate I really enjoy watching them compete and am grateful for all that they are learning through team sports.

Mother’s Nest

Kaylee did our FHE tonight and shared a sweet mother’s day story from an old Friend magazine. She had a cute question game at the end about me. Then we went outside and played. Jacob brought the ladder out to check the bluebird house because we have been seeing a lot of activity in it. Sure enough there is a nest!
Bluebird Nest
After listening to Kaylee’s story and seeing the nest, I was reminded of another story on how a mother should build her home. I have always loved this example and have saved it in my Mother’s file. I found a copy of it on the web tonight to share:
Robin Ruff Van Wagenen, “A Lesson on Nest Building,” Ensign, Oct 1999, 30
“An object lesson on mothering was right outside my front door.

I never would have thought a bird could teach me how to be a better mother. But that’s what happened several years ago when I found a bird building her nest in our front-yard almond tree. I was impressed that she positioned the nest high in the tree so that animals would not likely disturb it and that she chose two strong, sturdy branches to provide solid support and protection against the elements.

I peeked in on the nest only occasionally so I would not disturb her growing family. First I saw four eggs appear, then I could hear the chirping of baby birds. As time passed the chirping subsided, so I decided to check on things. My heart sank when I realized tragedy had struck. The danger had come not from without—but from within. Two of the four young birds had grown up and flown away, but the other two had died, tangled by their feet in some plastic strands in the nest. They had struggled to pull themselves free but could not do so.

I realized what went wrong. When the mother bird had built her home, she used the usual twigs, branches, grass, and reeds. But she had also been attracted to some colorful plastic strands that she wove throughout the nest. They looked similar to natural materials, but they were a little flashier, a bit more shimmery. They were not the same, however. The plastic had no give, and when the two remaining baby birds had tried to get free, the artificial materials pulled tighter.

I have often thought of the lessons that little nest taught me as a mother in my own family. First, I need to build my nest using the proper materials. Our prophets have counseled us to build solid homes with materials such as family home evening, scriptures, family prayer, Sabbath day observance, and service to others. These tools give me the best chance of success with my family.

Or I can build my nest with flashier substitutes that may be more popular, more exciting, or easier to use. I want my own nest to be as safe and secure as possible. I want to minimize any outside influences that could be harmful to my children, whether physically or spiritually.

Some children remain strong no matter what influences are occasionally brought into the home. Two of the birds in my front yard were able to free themselves and fly away to start building their own nests. But for other children who confront harmful influences, the results may be disastrous, as they were for the remaining two birds in the nest.”

Looking at the nest in the bluebird house tonight, I could see most of our BLUE trampoline pad thread. Maybe that’s attractive to a BLUE bird. I hope the babies won’t get stuck in it. I wanted to reach in and take it out, but knew that I couldn’t. I wonder how many times Heavenly Father looks down on me knowing that there is something in MY home that he wants to reach in and take out because it could hurt my babies.

Mother’s Tea Quote

Today Jacob’s class had a Mother’s Tea for all the mothers. It was fun. They had us sit at this big table and then each of our children stood behind us and massaged our shoulders. They had prepared poems for us. I teared up as I read Jacob’s, but then gained control so I wouldn’t embarrass him. They also had made jars of lotions for us. We finished off by playing the Newlywed Game, but did questions relating to how well they knew their mothers.

I loved the quote that was the theme for the party today and wanted to share it”

“To the world you might just be one person but to one person you might be the World” author unknown

I just loved that! I hope that to each of my children I AM their World because to me THEY truly are MY World.

Wild Week

Our Ward split today.  My best friend from the Ward is now NOT in my Ward.  (Angie and I did agree that we would still be friends though!)  My handsome hubby was called as the Bishop’s Executive Secretary.

Stever

He is going to be awesome.  He is always so willing to serve and help out where he can.  I’m just excited because I think I might be getting a little break from YW’s.  We will see how everything gets all worked out.

Jacob froze ALMOST to death at a scout camp in Bethune, Colorado.  I didn’t see him from Friday morning until Saturday at 11:00pm  I sure missed him and worried about him.

Jacob Camporee Bethune

Nathan, Kaylee, and Rebecca each had two soccer games this week.  They are so fun to watch because they are so aggressive.  I think part of it is due to the fact that they are constantly playing against each other.  Kaylee’s coach talked to me after her Saturday game and told me what an incredible athlete she is.  He said that her defense skills are an entire level above the other girls.  He said that he could put Kaylee back on defense by herself and not even worry.  She totally charges up to whomever is attacking and stops them head on.  There is no waiting around with Kaylee.  Nathan had a goal in his Longmont game.  Speaking of Longmont, I sent Stephen 1 1/2 hours up there and stayed here for the girls’ games thinking that I was getting the better deal.  Well, the weather in Longmont was gorgeous and the weather down here was in the upper 30’s with a humid mist.  Mix Ashley and Jerrica crawling all over me cold and wet – it wasn’t very fun!  Here’s a photo from Kaylee’s game last weekend.

Kaylee Soccer

On to the little girls, they keep me soo busy!  I think it’s worse now that Jerrica plays with Ashley.  They just make mess after mess.  I did take them to Pump It Up on Wednesday.  Jerrica pushed her favorite stuffed frog around in their little push cars.  We had met Kelly and Landon there.  Ashley loves Landon and all of his energy and I love talking with Kelly.  Here is a picture of them, notice how red in the face they are from their jumping and running.

Pump It Up

Now on to a new week with more adventures!

Yummy Bow Tie Pasta Recipe

Just wanted to share this yummy recipe that my family loves. I love it because it's a crockpot recipe. We had very cold, wet soccer games today and it was nice to come home to something warm and ready to eat! I got it from Sherelle Christensen's blog about a year ago. She has some great recipes!

Click on the Recipe picture and you can see it nice and big.

May Day May Day

Can you tell that I LOVE holidays!?! I just love any excuse for making a day different than the norm.

May Day 2

Today is May Day and has been a tradition for our family to deliver flowers to friends. We have taken the Steininger’s flowers on May Day for 10 years now. They were our adopted grandparents at our old house. One year I was pregnant or something and wasn’t going to take flowers. But you know how traditions work with kids involved, they don’t let you forget. Anyway, that year as we were standing on their doorstep with the flowers, Judith said, “I was just asking Bill if he thought you guys would come this year, and he told me ‘of course they will, they never forget us’. I about started crying right there because I really wasn’t going to do it. I guess there are more people than just the kids that remember our May Day tradition. Here is the picture of them today. Aren’t they a cute little couple!?!

May Day

As I was reminiscing about past May Day’s I remembered one year when Jacob and Makayla were only 4 or 5. Kristy had a mean old lady that lived a couple doors down from her duplex. We came to the doorstep and she yelled at us through the screen, “Go away from here”. I spoke up, “But we have flowers for you” She then retorted “I don’t want your flowers, get away from my house”. I told her that we would just leave them there on her doorstep. She quickly told us not to leave ANYTHING on her doorstop because it would just sit there and rot. So as we were walking away sad that she wouldn’t recognize our gesture, the kids said something to the effect, “Let’s find someone nice who likes nice things done for them.” I have learned that you HAVE to have a RECIEVER if you are going to be a GIVER!

We delivered a few bouquets today to wonderful recievers, and can I just say it felt GOOD!

Memorizing

So I’ve been thinking a lot about Sister Beck’s talk, and what I need to do to implement some of her ideas. As I was pondering on this, I came across President Charles W. Dahlquist’s talk at the Draper Temple Fireside. He was just released as the General YM President. He spoke on memorization and how he had his daughters memorize numerous poems growing up. ANYWAY, he said the following,

“What is the value of memorization? TO HELP US REMEMBER. To put the knowledge down in to the recesses of our souls, so that we can draw on it when we need it! PREPARE NOW, MEMORIZE NOW, STRENGTHEN NOW so that you are prepared when difficult situations arise.”

Isn’t that so true!!! This can apply to lessons learned in school, at church or at home. Think of all the tedious studying a doctor does during med school and how valuable it is when he needs to recall it. Think of how a scripture or hymn planted deep in our minds can provide an answer or help later on.

On my mission we had to memorize the discussions. The reason that we were instructed to do this was so that we would know the teaching and principle inside and out. I love the strength and security that I have from the scriptures that I have memorized.

I believe that songs and rhythm help us to memorize. I’m thankful for the Primary songs that teach doctrine to little minds without them even realizing it. I love the songs taught at school help the kids remember.

ANYWAY, back to what I implemented to put this into action. My kids are constantly reading the cereal boxes in a daze in the mornings. They are half awake and in slow motion. So I have a page in a sheet protector that I lay on the table every night after dinner has cleared. In the sheet protector in small lettering it has the quote from President Dahlquist on memorization, (so they will know WHY we are doing this), and then in bold large lettering I have a quote that I want them to memorize. In weeks to come I’m going to have them memorize poems, scriptures, quotes, you name it. I’m really excited about this because the kids have been excited. Of course it’s something new, but I’m determined to make it a habit to have them memorize things that are good.

SOOO, do any of YOU have any great quotes, poems, …. Let me know!

I Cried Tonight

Tanya, don’t read this post.  I mean it Tanya if I hear that you read this … I’m going to be very upset.  Now that Tanya is not reading, I will tell you why I cried.  It started out with this on Sunday:

Jerra Kitty2

Yes, she looks nice and soft and gentle, but then things started to happen ……

Jerra Kitty

She started------.turning into a brute and climbing out of her highchair.  Oh did you think that I was going to say something bad happened to a kitty.  No, something bad happened to my baby, she got big on me.  And tonight she sat in a new booster seat AT the table.  As the highchair was whisked out tears DID fall.  I don’t want my baby to get big and that’s why I didn’t want Tanya reading this.  (Not because Tanya is the vet technician)  I just didn’’t want Tanya to see what will happen to HER baby!

I have to add just a few more of the kitty pictures from today.  Jerrica LOVES to “softly” hold the kitties.

Jerra Kitty3

See Tanya, she really is soft and sweet with them.

Jerra Kitty4

You aren’t looking anymore are you?!?  Because sometimes, just sometimes the petting may feel like pushing.  And the teeth might start to bite down for a STRONG, little hug for the kitty.

Jerra Kitty5

Oh we better end this post before PETA gets a hold of any more of these kitty photos.

Gardening with Plastic Knives

Look what is on my tomato plants!!! No it's not the big horned worm, I'm sure he will be coming later this summer. My tomatoes have blossoms. I took a picture extra close so that you could see them. I took the wall of water off just for a minute to show you the plant itself growing.
Now for the gardening tip of the week. It is Plastic Knives. You know how you get a package of mixed plasticware and use all of the spoons and forks, but never the knives. This is the perfect use for them. I use them as markers for my plants. You just write with a Sharpie on the handle and jam the knife into the ground. I even mark the colors on my mixed tulips and gladiolas in case I want to move them around after the plant has withered. I also mark the various vegetable seeds that I use. I may have two rows of peas of two different varieties, but like to know which performs better. Once again the plastic knives to my rescue. I learned this years ago when Grandma Jackie would have me come down and write on her knives and help her label in her greenhouse. You can see my knives here: http://mymixofsix.blogspot.com/2009/03/sprouting-and-budding.html

Medieval Day

Another dress up day at school. Nathan has been studying the Medieval Ages. They had a huge feast with their hands for lunch. Parents had brought in fried chicken, apple slices, cubed cheese, baked potatoes and pie for dessert. Then they rotated between three different stations. The first was the "Market". They could buy shields, jeweled goblets, leaf crowns, or felt Robin Hood hats. Nathan and Asa opted for the shields. They also would perform for additional coins. Nathan juggled scarves.

The next room was completely dark with only a few stain glass windows. It was the monastery. Each child sat by a battery operated candle and copied quotes and phrases using a plume and ink. They had monk chanting music in the background. All of the kids had to take a vow of silence before they could enter the room. They were given pieces of bread of small cups of water as they wrote.

Here is Nathan in the stocks. I wish that I could've brought it home to put Ashley in!

Outside was sword fighting and relays on stick horses. The kids had to joust their sword through rings.

The last room was the castle. They sat at the long feast table and enjoyed minstrels playing and acts from the court jesters.

Here is Nathan's class. I wish that I would've taken a picture of all three classes when they were together because they looked so cute in their costumes. Anyway, it was fun and I think they learned a lot.

One thing that I learned is that the monks sure had a lot of peace and quiet to ponder and think. While we were in that room, I could actually think! I feel that we live in such a time in our lives so filled with technology that we do not have the quiet to think. I know that I always have the music going and someone on the cell phone. I need to turn things off to make the peace and quiet I need to ponder and think.

Canning

April 2009 196

This has been a week of CANNING!!!  Yesterday after the zoo, Cari and I went to the cannery and stocked up on quite a few things.  Cari is definitely the professional at the cannery.  The lady there was raving about how flaky and moist potato rolls are that are made with the potato flakes.  I’m excited to get the recipe from her and give them a try.  Anyway, just wanted to thank Cari again for helping the Thompson’s out on their food storage.

Then today Lorinda came over and made Strawberry Freezer Jam with me.  We did take a picture together, but I decided the jam looked more photogenic than I did.  I LOVE strawberry freezer jam and think that I better make some of Grandma Jackie’s bran rolls tomorrow!

I just love adding to my food storage!

The Halloween Book

Shutterfly is always giving away freebies. They recently had a free 8 by 8 book. I decided to do a Halloween one of all the years since we have been married. I tried to give each year a two page lay-out. I thought that it would be a fun coffee table book for October. I have the kids in their costumes scrapbooked, but thought that it would be neat to have all the years together. It was really fun and easy to make. The key to the book though was that it was FREE!!! Here are a few photos that I took before I stuck it in the Halloween box. I think I might do a Christmas one now.

Jacob's Art

Just wanted to share Jacob's art from this week's class. He is finally finished with his shading projects and is very excited about his current project. He is working with color now! I love how excited the entire family gets to see his latest project. He is definitely our artist!

Earth Day

Today was Earth Day. I couldn't send my kids to school to sit indoors and not enjoy our beautiful earth. SOOO we had a family field trip day and I took them to the zoo. The weather was perfect! We had a really fun day together. One of our favorite parts of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are the giraffes. I love this next series of photos.

First, Ashley finds an extra giraffe cracker just lying on the ground.

Then she shows her giraffe friend what she has.

Last but not least she has to taunt the giraffe to see how long his tongue really is. See Jerrica isn't the only one that Ashley teases.

Besides feeding the giarrfes, we also fed the birds. As you can see girls aren't the only ones attracted to my Jacob!

This peacock seemed to follow us the entire day, puffing and squawking. I had to laugh once again at Ashley. She kept yelling at it constantly, "Don't be such a mean cock!" The boys kept trying to get her to say peacock, but she had "cock" set in her mind!

Now that it's Spring there were quite a few new animals. I loved watching the orangutans swinging with their baby. Even the little giraffe walking around with his mother. The animal mothers didn't seem to have a care in the world. They weren't cleaning their house, doing projects, running errands, worrying about dinner - they were just playing with their babies. I need to learn from the animal kingdom I guess. I sure need to spend more time playing with my kids instead of getting caught up with the mundane schedule of life.

Gardening after the Snow

They are still ALIVE!!!

I always plant my tomatoes the first week of April in the Wall of Waters. I start them from see and feel like they get too spindly if they aren't put outside. However, here in Colorado we have major amounts of snow in April. This past week we had a big drift of snow in my garden. I'm always amazed at how much stronger and greener the tomatoes look after a big snow. The wall of waters sometimes are frozen yet keep the plant warm like an igloo. Anyway, I just had to take a picture today of how big and green the tomato plants are looking.

Below is a picture of my experiment. Mom has always said that tires warm up the plant's root system making the fruit redden faster AND produce more. I shall soon see!
It has been sooo warm that all I want to do is work outside. I have planted my peas, onions and as I have mentioned the tomatoes. Tonight I let the kids help me touch up our little wooden garden signs. I need to get a couple more dowels. I think dad needs to cut a few more veggie signs for me. Are you up for it dad?
Last but not least is my little gardener, non stop talker that helps me WAYYY tooo much. She always comes outside in these glamorous garbs. I couldn't resist getting some shots of her today. This picture doesn't show her little skirt and princess heels that she trips around in.
Anyway, I'm SOOO excited to be able to work outside now in such beautiful weather!
