Money

Today we headed to Denver to visit the Mint.  I smiled to myself as we entered and the older girls turned around to tell me that they thought we were going to a place that made mints to eat.

We drooled over the bins of money, envious that our pockets didn't have any in them.  The tour was filled with facts like ...

  • A penny costs 1.5 cents to make and a dollar costs 7 cents.  Thus the profit in producing money lies in the dollar.
  • A coin is in circulation on the average of 60 years, but bills are only in circulation for 14 months.
  • Cream of Tartar is used in the oxidation process to make the coins shiny.
  • The coin's ridge is critical to the coin for stacking and preserving the picture on the coin.
  • Only one person has ever stolen from the Denver Mint.  He had a peg leg and because of the limp no one would notice the heavy bags that he would swagger out the door with.

We also were able to complete Nathan's quarter collection.  The Arizona quarter has eluded us.  Not anymore!  He can now work on his President collection.

We also dropped by the temple while we were up there.

And according to Nathan, you can't leave Denver without a box of Krispy Kremes.

I so love hanging out with my kids.  They make me laugh.  We really enjoyed our Family Field trip day!

  2. I grew up in Denver (well, lived there for about 5 years...) but we were a single parent family, just she and I, so we never did cool stuff like this... though we did go camping quite often.
