Reading Programs

Summer means reading programs.  We signed up for Barnes and Noble’s program last week.  Rebecca and Kaylee finished it over the weekend and were dying to get their free book because one of the freebies was a “Fancy Nancy” (A series that is a big favorite here at the Thompson’s)

So on Monday we were off to get their books and then on to the Public Library to sign up for their program.  Can I just say I love the library program!  The kids are always so excited to read and get their prizes.  They also have different programs from Jerrica’s age clear up to Jacob’s.

One year we made tye dye library bags, which the kids STILL use.  This year we made button bookmarks.  I thought it would be killing two birds with one stone, teaching them how to sew on a button and making a bookmark.  Nathan was not too into it and said that if a button would ever fall off his shirt he would just buy another shirt.  I hope that kids earns the big money!  Sweet little Kaylee ended up making his bookmark.  Anyway, here are some of them:

Last but not least I want to talk about our reading time.  We call it DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read).  We have always done it after lunch.  This year as a change though I made a schedule with each of the four older kids having a day to read to the two little girls, and then I read to them on Friday.  Yesterday was so fun hearing Jacob read picture books to the girls and how excited they were to have HIM reading for story time.  It also gave me time to get a few things done as they read.
